Wind mitigation and FORTIFIED savings calculator
An inspection that documents your home's wind-resistant features, or an upgrade like a FORTIFIED roof, can lower your premium. This calculator shows how long it takes to pay for itself, using your premium, the discount your insurer quotes, and your costs. It doesn't assume any discount for you, because discounts differ by insurer, state and home.
What this calculator leaves out
- Premium changes: if rates rise, a percentage discount saves more dollars; if your insurer changes, the discount may change too.
- Other benefits of an upgrade, like less damage in a storm, a lower deductible on some policies, or a better chance of keeping coverage.
- Financing costs if you borrow for a roof.
How the discounts work: wind mitigation inspection, FORTIFIED roof, 4-point inspection (a different report), and wildfire home hardening discounts.
Questions people ask
Where do I find my discount?
Ask your insurer or agent what your premium would be with the inspection or upgrade, and use the difference. In Florida, insurers must tell you the range of each mitigation discount when the policy is issued and at each renewal, and the discounts apply only to the hurricane-wind part of your premium, so enter those in dollars. Other states' rules are in our wind mitigation and FORTIFIED roof guides.
Is a wind mitigation inspection worth it?
Compare the inspection fee with the yearly savings your insurer quotes. If the savings are more than the fee, it pays for itself in the first year. In Florida a wind mitigation form can be used for up to five years if nothing about the house changes, so the savings can repeat at each renewal.
Do grants count?
Yes: enter any grant you expect (for example from My Safe Florida Home or Strengthen Alabama Homes) and the calculator subtracts it from the cost. Grant programs open and close and have their own rules, so check the program before you count on it.
